Celebrity Wearables: Is That An Endorsement On Your Wrist?

If there’s one group in society that is super-conscious of it’s outward appearance it’s celebrities.  They have personal trainers who coach them through their routines and hold them accountable in their workouts.  We suspect they also have some input into what wearable fitness tech their celeb clients wear as well.

So we’ve done a deep research dive to uncover just what fitness trackers celebs are wearing and why.

(Former) President Barack Obama – Fitbit Surge

It’s no secret that President Obama loves basketball, scheduling regular pick-up games with staffers and guests while in the White House. But during his second term, while Michelle was betting busy promoting fitness and healthy choices for America’s youth, Obama suddenly donned a fitness wearable.

Viewers of Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee picked up on it right away and outed the device as a $250 Fitbit Surge.  Fitbit goes one-up on Smart Watches with the Surge, calling it a Super Watch for all that it does.

Beyond the basic steps, calories, stairs and heart rate, the Surge also has a 7 day battery life, monitors sleep, tracks your heart rate, and has GPS tracking (which we’re pretty sure the Secret Service would have disabled).  But the Fitbit Surge also lets you control the music on your smartphone and receive call and text notifications.

Kanye West – Nike+ Fuelband SE

Anyone who knows or has followed Kanye West knows that he’s an absolute work-a-holic.  Which means its a good thing that he wears a fitness tracker.  But we’re a little surprised that he chose one as basic a the Nike+ Fuelband SE. Unlike President Obama’s Fitbit Surge, Kanye’s Fuelband SE really just tracks activity and syncs with an app.  There’s a little bit of carrot built into the app to challenge you throughout the day, but not much more.

Maybe Kanye chose the Fuelband SE because of it’s simplicity.  As a recording artist, clothing designer, music producer and shoe designer he already has enough on his plate.

Casey Neistat – Apple Watch, Samsung Gear 2, Tag Heuer Connected, etc., etc.

When you’re one of the most successful vloggers on Youtube not only can you afford to wear just about any Smart Watch or Fitness Tracker, you also get a lot of companies sending you free stuff.  Maybe they’re hoping that you’ll wear their gear in one of your episodes that regularly gets from two to five million+ views.

Casey is an avid runner, having competed many marathons, and his daily vlogs often include a segment of his run.

In various episodes of his daily vlog, Casey has been seen sporting everything from a Samsung Gear 2 to a $2000 Tag Heuer Connected Luxury Sportwatch.  In fact, all Neistat had to do to get a Tag Heuer was tweet to them that he wanted one. We be waaaay jealous!

Christina Applegate – Tory Burch For Fitbit

Showing up at the Hollywood Walk of Fame to help support her co-star Katey Sagal induction, Christina Applegate was sporting a very chic Tory Burch for Fitbit bracelet.  The Tory Burch bracelet is designed to accept a Fitbit Flex inside of it, allowing the wearer to be both fashionable and functional at the same time.

Hey. Every step counts whether you’re on a treadmill or the red carpet!

Christina has fiercely rebounded from some health challenges in the last few years and we’re sure wearing a fitness tracker is just one of many ways she stays in top shape.

It’s not always easy to spot what wearables are on the wrists of celebrities, but we bet that after reading this article you’ll be looking at your Instagram feed a little bit differently now!
