Will Mobile World Congress 2017 Finally Settle The Tethered Smart Phone Debate

Barcelona – With the start of the Mobile World Congress in Spain tomorrow, many smart watch makers will be launching new products with features that would be unheard of just a couple of years ago.

Like mobile connected tablets when the iPad launched, smart watches like the new Huawei Watch 2 arrive with a sim-card slot to free us from device tethering.

Or does it?

With the S3 Smartwatch, Samsung was the first to allow us to be OS agnostic, meaning we could keep our smartphone regardless of whether it was Android or Apple because the new smart watch could work with either.  But Samsung also released a 4G LTE version of the S3 for the consumers who want the smartwatch to be fully liberated from the smart phone.

We get it.  We’ve all had those maddening moments when you’re trying to juggle and connect your bluetooth devices to each other and you throw your hands up in frustration.  Or you leave one behind. Or it’s not charged.  Consumers just want the smart watch industry to figure it out.  Actually, we desperately need them to figure it out.

To make matters more confusing between the tethered and non-tethered smart watches argument we also have smart watches that can share a sim card from your smartphone.  While the cave man inside of us understands why this feature was created, it makes the least sense of all to our forward thinking brains.  It’s bad enough we’re fumbling around with connectivity and too many devices, but going through the hassle of peeling off smart phone backs and removing batteries to swap sim cards between devices is almost a joke.

So we’ll be watch this Mobile World Congress very closely.  The overcrowded smart watch segment needs two things desperately; a culling of the device making herd and a solution to the integration issues affecting all wearables.

Stay tuned.
